Ikat is a classic. I am crazy for the colors and the myriad of pattern variations. So have many other designers, magazine editors and bloggers from what I have seen. However, it would appear that the classics moment (like Pashmina, remember those scarves?) could be over when New York street vendors are selling a version of it.
Ikat scarf corner of 22nd and Park Avenue 11/11/10.
For people who try to avoid, rather than follow hot trends, this is actually excellent news. A classic is only classic until it gets picked up, prinked up & paraded around town at which point it wears out its welcome & gets hustled out the service entrance.
Ikat will be safe to use again when it reaches room temperature. I can't wait.
