Thank You

A sincere to thank Ronda Carman of All the Best for her post on the Charlotte Moss’ room at Kips Bay.

Also, a big thank you to Ivan Meade of Meade Design Group for his In Conversation With post about me.

Thank you so much for the support. I really appreciate it.

The Roses of Summer

Last summers roses were spectacular. I had never grown them before, but I marched right ahead and planted eight roses to cover the fence and the back of the building. I learned quickly that they are easy to grow. Just water, fertilizer and a little trim ever now and then, that’s about it.
What pleasure they gave us throughout the summer. The six Pierre de Ronsard along the fence and the two Zepherin Drouhin running up the back wall were stunning, and the fragrance - so lush.
This year another eight are being added. I found this great heritage rose company in California called Vintage Gardens. They have or can get just about every rose under the sun. The site is really informative and the customer service is wonderful. The first of the roses arrived yesterday, packed really impressively and with clear planting instructions.
I can’t wait for the first batch of rose jam and all the other good things I plan on making this summer.

My Pierre de Ronsard

The Pierre de Ronsards in their glory.

Mme Caroline Testout will be climbing up both corners of the bagatelle.

Reine des Violettes will go on the arbor.

Thank you Charlotte

Hot off the press, Charlotte Moss sent the photo of her room at the Kips Bay Designer Show House with my fabric in it. All I can say is thank you so much Charlotte. As expected, it is so beautiful and well done.

Moss is a genius, she had the fabric pleated into the design. What attention to detail.

I can’t wait to see it in person Thursday night at preview party.

In the Beginning

I love magazines and the stories they tell. Beautiful spaces all so wonderfully turned out. However, the finished project is only part of the story. I always find the process of how things were created so interesting, this is the process of my own garden. From grim to glorious in three months.
When I first saw the yard I was instantly inspired and knew exactly how it was going to look when I got done with it. Little did I know what was ahead. I knew it wouldn’t take long and once it started, it didn’t.
The summer of ’06 when we moved in, there were still a cast of workmen running around banging and sawing day and night. It wasn’t until April ’07, almost two years after buying the property that things got moving. Here is the evolution.

The winter  of my discontent '05/'06

Summer '06, the neighbors car completes the setting.

Spring '07 that's thirteen loads of top soil.

At last, some progress, the beds are installed.

The fence starts to go up.

The shed arrives.

The sod goes down.

At last, the dream is real.

The Joys of Country Living

Sarah Gray Miller and the editors of Country Living have made my month. I am ecstatic to have my garden featured in their redesign launch issue of the magazine. The May issue features six pages of tips, how-to and other relevant information that I have learned in creating a chic sustainable garden that doesn’t require six gardeners to maintain. Included in the scheme is delicious home grown organic food almost year around. All in a tiny space that was once a dumpy neglected patch when I bought the place.
So here it is, after some loving care, thirteen truck loads of new top soil, a fence, raised beds from Oregon, sod and a customized prefab shed.

Charlotte Moss and Kips Bay

How would one describe designer Charlotte Moss? Designer super star, philanthropic as the day is long and of course, a gracious lady. Yes. However, one has to add visionary to the list. It is of course designers like Charlotte that take risks and make design what it is. An art.
So you can image how excited I was when she emailed me to say her assistant was going to pull some samples of my collection at John Rosselli and Associates for a fantastic new project.
Charlotte has chosen my pattern Beekman in a custom color for one of the rooms she is doing at New York's very prestigious Kips Bay Decorator Show House, the grande dame of American show houses. To the tune of one hundred and fifty yards for curtains and walls.
I say WOW, this will be a must see!

Thomasʼ Cover

It was really thrilling to open the Sunday New York Times recently and find the Prudential Douglas Elliman real estate supplement to the New York Times. The apartment on the cover was designed by none other than my partner Thomas Burak for the chic Upper Westside building The Apthorp.
